You Can Do Hard Things

Life has a way of presenting us with challenges that feel insurmountable. Yet, it’s often through these very challenges that we discover our strength and propel ourselves toward success.

When I think back to one of the toughest moments in my life, I remember being a college sophomore, young and full of dreams, when I found out I was expecting. I had to make the daunting call to my parents, knowing that it would be met with disappointment. The people around me doubted me—some said I had ruined my life, others pitied my child.

The journey was anything but easy, but it was worth it. Today, I’ve reached milestones I once only dreamed of: serving in the C-suite as a CHRO, and now, taking the bold step of starting my own HR consulting firm, Nova Dawn HR Consulting Partners. And that child they felt sorry for? He’s a two-time NCAA champion, a Villanova graduate, and living his dream as a professional athlete in the NBA.

I don’t share this story to boast but to remind you—and myself—that we are capable of doing hard things.

Starting my own business is another hard thing. Even with over 25 years of experience in HR, stepping into entrepreneurship is a whole new challenge. There are days when I think about how much easier it might be to return to a corporate role. But I remind myself of my “why”—my purpose—and it keeps me moving forward.

That’s my encouragement to you today: Whether you’re in career transition, starting your own venture, or navigating a personal challenge, think back to a time when you overcame something hard. Let that memory serve as your proof that you can do hard things. Then, remind yourself of your “why.” If you don’t have one, create one. Your “why” is your foundation—the reason you keep going when things get tough.

To do hard things, you also need to take care of yourself. Wellness isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s about nourishing your body with healthy food, moving daily, and getting adequate rest. It’s about giving yourself the energy and resilience to face whatever comes your way.

At Nova Dawn HR, we understand the importance of wellness—both personal and organizational. Whether you need support building a culture of well-being or strategies for leadership development, we’re here to help. Our certified executive coaches can guide you through these challenges and help you thrive. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us for a free consultation at [email protected].

Remember: you’ve already done hard things in your life, and you can do them again. Lean into your strength, focus on your “why,” and prioritize yourself. Because you can—and will—rise to the occasion.
